Medical marijuana cards in Montana just got a lot cheaper.

The state health department has reduced the fee to obtain or renew a medical marijuana card from $75 to $5.

The changes went into effect on Saturday July 9, according to the health department website.

This comes on the heels of a major deadline. Beginning August 31, Montana medical marijuana caregivers will be limited to three patients. Providers say the ruling would shut them down.

However, voters could change regulations in November. One proposed initiative lifts the three-patient restriction, another repeals the medical marijuana law.

There are just over 13,000 patients in Montana.

Signatures are being processed for initiatives through Friday, July 15.
